Rafah Tent Camp Hit by Israeli Airstrike
Massive Blaze Kills 45
Exodus of Palestinians from Southernmost City
An Israeli airstrike triggered a massive blaze, killing 45 people in a tent camp in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, May 27, 2024.
The strike came as part of Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has reached the Strip's southernmost city, Rafah. Hundreds of people have fled Rafah in recent days as Israeli forces have increased their shelling and ground assault on the city.
Newly-released satellite photos reviewed by the Associated Press show a large exodus of Palestinians from Rafah. The images show hundreds of tents being removed from the city, indicating that a significant number of people have fled.
The airstrike on the tent camp is the deadliest single attack in the current conflict. It brings the total number of Palestinians killed in the fighting to over 200, including more than 50 children.
The Israeli military claims that the airstrike was carried out on a Hamas target, but witnesses said that the camp was full of civilians.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from the international community, with the United Nations calling for an immediate ceasefire.
The conflict in Gaza is now in its third week, with no end in sight. The humanitarian crisis in the Strip is worsening by the day, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes and in need of food, water, and medical care.
